Las Palomas Ranch is one of the largest and finest examples of a classic “sand sheet” quail ranch in South Texas. The
Palomas Ranch has a rich recreational hunting history; having been the quail hunting destination of three presidents, multiple governors and numerous dignitaries over the years. Palomas Ranch is in one of the most desirable
and tightly held areas of the country for ranch land. Few ranches of this size and prestige have ever
become available for sale in the area. The property incorporates all native grasses, with natural motts of live oaks
and native mesquite trees creating prime habitat for bobwhite quail and a habitat that supports excellent
populations of deer, turkey and dove.
Improvements: A centerpiece is the ranch style Lodge with large living and dining rooms. Breezeways and covered porches connect guests to two adjacent sleeping quarters with a total of seven separate rooms with ensuite bathrooms Amazing landscaping and a swimming pool surround the lodge shaded by large live oaks, palm and anaqua trees. Additional ranch improvements include manager home, and multiple sheds/barns for vehicles and equipment. On the north end is an active working ranch area with barns, equipment storage, shop, tack room, dog kennels, and other support. There are 3 set of cattle working pens. Near the entrance is another camp with 3 cabins.
Terrain-Vegetation: The South Texas sand sheet is noted by many to be the best habitat for bobwhite quail not only in Texas, but the United States. Soils are predominantly Nueces Fine San creating a well draining topsoil that allows for native grasses to thrive. This tall grass grassland include native like seacoast bluestem, paspalums, indian grass, and big bluestem native grasses combined with a multitude of native forbs that equally thrive in sandy soils. 2,000 Acres of the ranch are dominated by thick Live Oak trees throughout with 6,000 acres open grassland savannas with Live Oak motts including some grand live oaks. The remaining 6,500 acres is open grasslands with a mix of oak and mesquite trees.
Wildlife: The main native trophy on the ranch is Bobwhite quail, with ranch committed to maximizing quail habitat through rotational grazing. The ranch is divided into 13 separate pastures plus include prescribed burns, discing and excellent water distribution, Whitetail deer are supported by pockets of excellent brush although the main effort is quail. With mature live Oak trees and drainages, turkey are also plentiful. Dove hunting is supported by multiple ponds fed by water wells.
Water: Multiple ponds and drainages throughout the property fill with water during wet times and form lush grasslands following the wet periods. These spots provide excellent wildlife and quail habitat and during some years, provide seasonal waterfowl hunting. Multiple ponds and other small lakes are fed by water wells. There are 9 electric wills and there are 9 windmills. Palo Blanco Creek runs through the property and Baluarte Arroyo runs along the southern boundary.
